Just picked up Photomatix and playing around, using my favorite subject...

Looks very nice. The top is HDR, right?

Actually both are, but I did different things with tone mapping and sharpening. Also, the bottom one is less sharp overall because I shot it at F/2.8. The top one was F/11.

You don't need a great camera to do good HDR shots. You just need one that you can manually meter to get the different exposures to compose the HDR. Then the software (Photomatix) does the real work. I've got a great camera, a Canon 5D Mark II, but could just as easily have done it with my old Rebel. The technology has gotten so good that a hack like me can even do good shots:)

How many exposures did you use? They look very nice! I am too cheap, so I am still use Cannon's DPP :p

I used 3 exposures from -2 EV to +2 EV. Photomatix is very cheap, or you can always find it in other ways quite easily (Yarr!) if you know what I mean...

That's pretty good with just 3 exposures. I guess I will see if I can get a "copy" of Photomatix :D

I did some with up to 5 exposures of non-GT-R things and they came out pretty nice. Using more exposures just gives you more flexibility in the tone mapping that is based on actual data rather than interpolation. Photomatix also does exposure blending, which is more hyperreal than the normal surreal HDR.

I was thinking about bringing my camera to Caffeine and Octane and seeing if the owners of other cars would let me do HDR's of their rides. There are so many cool cars that come out, so it would be a very interesting set of pics.

Thanks, I'd love to do one of your car. I was kind of hoping that you'd want one, because I love your car...

Playing around with B&W conversions from HDR's.
